2nd Street USA, Inc., the second-hand clothing store operator owned by Japan’s GEO Holdings Corporation, announced on Thursday that it is opening its fourth U.S. location in Torrance, California.

Aside from buying and selling men’s and women’s second-hand clothing and accessories, 2nd Street Torrance will also be the first of the chain’s stores to carry gently used kids’ clothing.

Brands available among the 10,000 items on offer include A Bathing Ape, Hysteric Glamour, Comme des Garçons, Supreme and Vivienne Westwood, as well as luxury labels like Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci.

Having first arrived in the U.S. with a store on Los Angeles’ Melrose Avenue in January 2018, 2nd Street has been slowly building up its presence on the West Coast, opening stores in Old Pasadena and Costa Mesa, Orange County in the same year.

The company has plans to expand to ten locations in the short term and 100 stores in the long term.

Considering the current boom in the apparel resale trend, it seems that 2nd Street’s expansion projects could not have come at a better time. According to research conducted by online resale marketplace ThredUp, the second-hand apparel market is expected to be worth $51 billion in the next five years and should be worth $64 billion by 2028.

On top of this, 2nd Street’s parent company has plenty of experience in the category. Based in Nagoya, Japan, GEO Holdings operates more than 1,800 brick-and-mortar locations in its home country, as well as e-commerce platforms. Over 500 of these locations are 2nd Street stores, with most of the remainder being accounted for by the company’s namesake GEO banner, which specializes in CD, DVD and game software rentals.

As the company pushes forward with its expansion on the West Coast, 2nd Street USA has also been particularly strategic with its latest store, choosing a location whose demographics mean the chain can rely on a certain amount of brand recognition. Located in the South Bay Area of Los Angeles, around 35% of Torrance’s population is of Asian heritage, including a number of Japanese and Japanese Americans.

2nd Street Torrance will open on January 25, 2020.
